    Indigenous Environmental Justice Podcast

    Get PDF
This project examines the use of podcasting as a platform to advocate for Indigenous Environmental Justice. In this research I aim to generate an understanding of how colonialism and climate change impose upon the movement for Indigenous food sovereignty through environmental injustice. Primary academic research for this project consisted primarily of conducting interviews with relevant knowledge holders, mostly from the local Anishinaabe community, which were recorded, edited and overdubbed with commentary in order to create a cohesive narrative for knowledge mobilization. Secondary academic research for this project included extensive literature reviews and case study considerations across global contexts. Empowerment of Indigenous peoples in their self-determination and governance over their respective territories is necessary for developing climate action strategies that are rooted in the reclamation of traditional practices and is identified as essential to adopting a decolonizing approach to community development and environmental conservation

Probing anomalous couplings using di-Higgs production in electron-proton collisions

A proposed high energy Future Circular Hadron-Electron Collider would provide sufficient energy in a clean environment to probe di-Higgs production. Using this channel we show that the azimuthal angle correlation between the missing transverse energy and the forward jet is a very good probe for the non-standard hhhhhh and hhWWhhWW couplings. We give the exclusion limits on these couplings as a function of integrated luminosity at a 9595\% C.L. using the fiducial cross sections. With appropriate error fitting methodology we find that the Higgs boson self coupling could be measured to be ghhh(1)=1.000.17(0.12)+0.24(0.14)g^{(1)}_{hhh} = 1.00^{+0.24(0.14)}_{-0.17(0.12)} of its expected Standard Model value at s=3.5(5.0)\sqrt s = 3.5(5.0) TeV for an ultimate 10 ab1^{-1} of integrated luminosity

The Perfect Game: An Ecological Systems Approach to the Influences of Elite Youth and High School Baseball Socialization

The purpose of this study was to examine the elite youth and high school baseball socialization process as a whole and the role of professionalization and corporatization in this process. The unique nature of baseball’s development model in the United States (U.S.), through a dual-track feeder system (college or minor leagues) allows for a wide-range of challenges and sociological factors to influence elite youth and high school prospects. Understanding players’ experiences exposes these challenges and sociological factors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four former elite youth and high school baseball players, one parent of a player, two coaches, and two media members. Using Bronfenbrenner’s (1977) ecological systems theory, the authors examined multi-level sociological factors contributing to participants’ socialization experiences. Key findings revealed corporate-level factors including National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) bylaws, Major League Baseball’s (MLB) collective bargaining agreement (CBA), and related commercialized changes in elite youth and high school baseball had a pronounced influence on baseball players’ socialization processes. Implications for policy and practice are discussed

A Novel Algorithm for the Determination of Walker Damage in Loaded Disc Springs

    Get PDF
In this paper, a novel algorithm for the determination of Walker damage in loaded disc springs is presented. The algorithm takes a 3D-scan of a disc spring, measured residual stresses, material parameters, and spring loads as inputs. It outputs a distribution of Walker damage over the surface area of the input disc spring. As the algorithm allows a fully automated determination of the Walker damage, it can be used by disc spring manufacturers to reduce the working time spent on this task by specialized engineers significantly. Compared to spreadsheet applications using analytical formulas and finite element models using idealized geometry, this approach offers a superior description of the stress states in disc springs

Der unbestimmte Ort des Eigentums: ein theoretischer Zugang zum ambivalenten Verhältnis von Enteignung und demokratischer Rechtsstaat

An increasing political contestation of the existing private-property order can currently be observed. With serious demands for expropriation, even outside marginalized splinter groups, a concept is returning that has largely disappeared from the focus of political theory. In this context, the article aims at a decidedly political–scientific examination of the legal institution of expropriation by locating the concept in the architecture of the democratic rule of law. Shifting between the poles of the constitutional guarantee of private property on the one hand and a potentiality of democratic contestation of the property order on the other, it is made clear that the concept of expropriation highlights the aporias of the democratic rule of law. The thesis is presented by means of a theoretical–historical contouring using the example of the intensive discussions on expropriation in the Weimar Republic and, in particular, with a more in-depth examination of the positions of Carl Schmitt and Otto Kirchheimer, which are subsequently figured as antipodes. While Schmitt seeks to make plausible a far-reaching rejection of expropriation potentials with a narrow concept of the rule of law, Kirchheimer focuses on an extensive interpretation of democratic power of disposition over the private-property order. The Weimar crisis years are examined as a kind of “laboratory” in order to profit from the extraordinary degree of crisis-induced searching and to work out a political science theoretical language for contemporary discussions of expropriation
